Gema, one idea. There were two different kinds of steering hubs on the original boats:

1. front mounted hubs with the rope pulley located between the steering wheel and the steering board (as shown on your model), or

2. hubs leading through the steering board, with the rope pulley (hidden) on the front side of the steering board.

On your model you could easily just leave off the pulleys (between the steering wheel and the steering board). This would evoke the realistic impression, that your ropes directly lead to the (hidden) pulleys on the frontside of the steering board.
